Engelbert Humberdinck´s fary-tale opera Hansel and Gretel is based on the Grimm brothers "Hansel and Gretel" and was composed to a libretto by the composer´s sister Adelheid Wette and was firstly composed as a play for the children in the family to perform. It turned out as a full-scale opera and was premiered in Weimar in December 1893 and has been performed near Christmastime ever since.
Music Director is Bjarni Frímann Bjarnason, Stage director is Þórunn Sigþórsdóttir, Eva Berger is the stage designer and María Th. Ólafsdóttir designs the costumes.
The opera is performed in Icelandic - translated by Þorsteinn Gylfason and Reynir Axelsson.
