Steffen Aarfing

Steffen studied architecture at the danish Royal Academy of Arts, and did his first stage design in 1980.

Since then, Steffen has designed numerous plays and operas as well as worked in the field of movie production design and theatre architecture.

Often in collaboration with Marie í Dali, he has designed several opera-productions with the director Kasper Holten, among them:

“La clemenza di Tito”,Verdi “La Traviata” in Stockholm , L’elisir d’Amore by Donizetti in Reykjavik,“Le Grand Macabre” by Ligeti, both in Copenhagen and at the San Francisco Opera, the complete “Der Ring des Nibelungen” in Copenhagen Opera, and, both in Vienna: Wolfgang Rihm’s “Jakob Lenz” and Giancarlo Menottis “Goya”.

Steffen did his first “Nozze di Figaro” with Johannes Schaaf’s Mannheim production in 2005, the second in summer 2007 in Vienna, at theater an der Wien, with Marie í Dali and Kasper Holten.

The Collaboration has since then led to a Don Carlo in Copenhagen and Lohengrin in Moscow, and recently to a new approach to opera-movies, JUAN, shot in Budapest. Production designed by Steffen, costume design by Marie with Andras Nagy as DoP..

Another Lohengrin created controversy at Deutsche Oper in Berlin spring 2012. Last May, a new production of TRISTAN UND ISOLDE , directed by Elisabeth Linton, could be seen in Helsinki.

May 2015 Szymanovsky's Król Roger opened at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.
