Oriol Tomas won the Grand Prize Claude Rostand for best lyric show in France in 2015, for Sauguet’s Les Caprices de Marianne which opera he staged in fifteen different opera houses in France, including Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse, Opéra du Grand Avignon, Opéra de Bordeaux and Opéra de Marseille. In 2016-2017, he directed Mozart’s Die zauberflöte at the Pacific Opera Victoria, Verdi’s La Traviata for the Jeunesses Musicales du Canada and Bizet’s Carmen for l’Atelier lyrique de l’Opéra de Montréal. He also worked on Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, presented by Le Parc Olympique as well as Mozart’s Don Giovanni for the Quebec Opera Festival presented by Les Jeunesses Musicales du Canada. Over the past seasons, he directed Mozart’s Don Giovanni with Opéra de Tours and Opéra de Reims, Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos, Handel’s Rodelinda with Pacific Opera Victoria, Donizetti‘s Don Pasquale, Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette for Jeunesses Musicales du Canada and three productions with Opéra de Montréal: Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia, Strauss’s La Chauve-Souris and Verdi’s Il Trovatore. For the Atelier lyrique de l’Opéra de Montréal, he directed Menotti’s The Consul and The Telephone, Bernstein’s Trouble in Tahiti, Noël à l’Opéra with the Orchestre Métropolitain, Apéro à l’Opéra, a television show broadcast on ARTV. He also directed two of his own creations: Le Quatrième Enfant-Lune, composed by Gabriel Thibaudeau and Aleacanto, which was programmed in the PdA junior series of the Place des Arts de Montréal, nominated for the Opus Prize 2010-11 in the category “Best show for a young audience”. Oriol directed Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande as part of his Masters degree in operatic stage direction at l’École Supérieure de Théâtre of l’Université du Québec à Montréal in 2008, where he also graduated in acting in 2003. He also studied stage direction and theatrical theory at l’Université Laval in Québec (1996). In addition to sitting on many juries, he has taught acting techniques to the singers of l’Atelier Lyrique de l’Opéra de Montréal, Université de Montréal, Ottawa University, Conservatoire de musique de Montréal, Pacific Opera Victoria's Young Artist Program, the Académie de Musique du Domaine Forget and the Folyestivale.
